I love travel books. I also love movies that inspire travel. So what's better than a travel-inspired book or movie? How about a travel book that's so awesome it's then been made into a movie!
Having read countless travel books and spent far too many hours watching movies to fuel my wanderlust, I thought it might be interesting to smash the two together and compile a best of list.
As the list shows, some books make great movies. Unfortunately, some books translate less well (here's looking at you Eat, Pray, Love). When smashing the two together I've come up with what I like to call my Boovies list.
For this ranking it is the combined scores of both the book and movie that counts. A crap movie version of a great book or a great movie version of a crap book lends itself to an average ranking. Only those Boovies which have scored well for both the book and movie version will achieve overall greatness.
To be eligible, an actual movie has to be made that doesn't consist of multiple episodes. So for example Long Way Round, which would be a worthy contender won't show up in the list. Likewise, whilst fiction is allowed, fantasy and science fiction is not, so other great movies such as Lord of the Rings, The Princess Bride, Life of Pi and The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy will, unfortunately have to adorn another list.
I haven't personally read or watched all the books/movies on this list and have collated the scores from Goodreads and IMBD in order to compile the list. That said, I have read or watched the movie version (and in some cases both) of the majority of them (27 of the top 50 at last count and 8 out of the top 10).
So without further ado, here are the best Boovies as listed by the movie name and date which it came out on the big screen.
