J. Maarten Troost (1969-) is an American writer who was born in The Netherlands. He has written four funny non-fiction travel books, with a fifth due out in 2017.

Sir Wilfred Patrick Thesiger (1910-2003) was born in Ethiopia to English parents and was an explorer and unlikely author, famous for his classic non-fiction travel adventure books Arabian Sandsand The Marsh Arabs. Redmond O'Hanlon (1947-) is a English author and Fellow of both the Royal Geographical Society and Royal Society of Literature. He has a gonzo type approach to writing often travelling to hazardous parts of the world.

Charles Nordhoff (1877-1947) and James Normal Hall (1887-1951) were American authors who met during World War 1 and most famously went on to write the Bounty Trilogy. Both Hall and Nordhoff spent time on Tahiti in French Polynesia and there is museum dedicated to Hall in Papeete who lived most of his life there.
