Hunter S. Thompson (1937-2005) was an American journalist and author who founded gonzo journalism, a form of "reporting" that tells it as it is, often centred around the journalist's own crazy behaviour and with no concern for social norms.

Thompson has written three books which can loosely be defined as travel-related, two of which have been made into motion pictures where Johnny Depp plays Thompson. The character Duke out of the comic strip Doonesbury is also based on Thompson.

Philip Ells is a lawyer and author who has written one travel book detailing time he spent as The People's Lawyer, while working in Tuvalu.

Levison Wood (1982-) is an English explorer and author who has visited more than 80 countries and is best known for his walking expeditions filmed as TV documentaries. Jon Swain is an English journalist who has reported on the world's wars and disasters in Asia and Africa for more than 40 years. He was the only British journalist in Phnom Penh when it fell to the Khmer Rouge in 1975, on which he based his memoir. Michael Palin (1943-) is a well known English comedian, TV personality and author. He is famous for being a member of Monty Python and has gone on to appear in a large number of travel-based TV series, for which writes an accompanying book. He has a website at www.themichaelpalin.com.

Emma Larkin is a pseudonym for an American journalist who reports on South East Asia and especially Myanmar, from her base in Bangkok. She has also used the pseudonym John Murray and has written two books on Myanmar.

Peter Biddlecombe is an English businessman who has travelled and written about 210 countries from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. Each of the 12 books (within a couple of exceptions) covers around 20 countries and are written in humourous fashion. Good luck finding his very last book, The End of the World though, as I can't even find a book cover for it.

John S. Burnett in an American adventurer and author who has has written for a range of popular publications such as the New York Times, National Geographic and The Guardian. He has also appeared on numerous TV shows including CNN, NBC, Good Morning America, BBC, Fox News and the History Channel. William Dalrymple (1965-) is a Scottish historian and author of history/travel books mostly centred around South Asia (the Indian sub-continent) and its religions. Sir Henry Rider Haggard (1856-1925) was a well known late-Victorian ear adventure novel writer. He is best known for his classic King Solomon's Mines where he introduced the central character Allan Quatermain, on whom Indian Jones is said to have been based on, and who also featured in the comic book series, A League of Gentleman. Raffi Youredjian is a British born Armenian who has written one travel book based on his funny travels by bike around Armenia.

Rusty Young (1975-) is an Australian born lawyer and author who wrote the best selling book Marching Powder. He has written one further fiction book and currently resides in Colombia. He has a Facebook page at OfficialRustyYoung.
